[gem5-users] Issue with the simulator and image booting

Hello Everyone,

I want to automatically start an application in image 16.04.1-64 by gem5 FS
mode with 4.8.13 kernel. The image is built by QEMU and the kernel is built
following by Jason's web(
http://www.lowepower.com/jason/setting-up-gem5-full-system.html). There is
no problem when I combine the image with the kernel by gem5. I have two
questions.

1. I wrote a disk-space-check.service in image by QEMU and everytime when I
boot the image by QEMU it can automatically run and show the disk space in
disk_space_report.txt. But when I boot the image by gem5 it shows 'started
disk-space-check.service' and the information in disk_space_reprot.txt
doesn't update. It seems like there is an intermediate issue with the
simulator and image booting.
2. When I boot the image by QEMU it shows 'Ubuntu 16.04.1 tty1', but when I
boot it by gem5 it shows 'Ubuntu 16.04.1 ttyS0'. why does it happen?

with best regards
Yunxia Zhu

Hello Everyone,
I want to automatically start an application in image 16.04.1-64 by gem5 FS mode with 4.8.13 kernel. The image is built by QEMU and the kernel is built following by Jason's web( http://www.lowepower.com/jason/setting-up-gem5-full-system.html). There is no problem when I combine the image with the kernel by gem5. I have two questions.
1. I wrote a disk-space-check.service in image by QEMU and everytime when I boot the image by QEMU it can automatically run and show the disk space in disk_space_report.txt. But when I boot the image by gem5 it shows 'started disk-space-check.service' and the information in disk_space_reprot.txt doesn't update. It seems like there is an intermediate issue with the simulator and image booting.
Write your own minimal bash startup script if you can afford that,
will likely be easier than debugging systemd.

2. When I boot the image by QEMU it shows 'Ubuntu 16.04.1 tty1', but when I boot it by gem5 it shows 'Ubuntu 16.04.1 ttyS0'. why does it happen?
This is normal, tty1 is the GUI, ttyS0 is the serial port, which
appears on your terminal. QEMU can also use the serial if you pass
-serial=mon:stdio and console=/dev/ttyS0 kernel CLI.

I think this means that you are not using the same console= linux
kernel CLI option. I would ensure that the kernel CLI is the same on
both runs, as that might explain behavior differences.

Hello Ciro Santilli,

Thanks for your reply. How to check if the kernel CLI is same or not? I use
"qemu-system-x86_64 -hda ubuntu-16.04.1-64.img -cdrom
ubuntu-16.04.1-server-amd64.iso -m 1024 -enable-kvm " to edit the image and
I use
"#!/usr/bin/sh
export
M5_PATH="/home/zhu/gem5_FS_64/gem5/full_system_sample/x86-system"

build/X86/gem5.opt \
configs/example/fs.py \
--mem-size=512MB \
--kernel=vmlinux \
--disk-image=ubuntu-16.04.1-64.img \
"
to boot the image with kernel by gem5.
I think if I can boot the image with kernel by QEMU the console will be
same. But when I use "sudo qemu-system-x86_64 -kernel vmlinux -hda
ubuntu-16.04.1-64.img -append "root=/dev/sda" --enable-kvm " it hangs. I
also use 'mount', but it has same problems as before. Could you give me any
suggestions? How could you make some changes not within gem5? Thank you.

Hello Everyone,
I want to automatically start an application in image 16.04.1-64 by gem5
FS mode with 4.8.13 kernel. The image is built by QEMU and the kernel is
built following by Jason's web(
http://www.lowepower.com/jason/setting-up-gem5-full-system.html). There
is no problem when I combine the image with the kernel by gem5. I have two
questions.
Post by Yunxia Zhu
1. I wrote a disk-space-check.service in image by QEMU and everytime
when I boot the image by QEMU it can automatically run and show the disk
space in disk_space_report.txt. But when I boot the image by gem5 it shows
'started disk-space-check.service' and the information in
disk_space_reprot.txt doesn't update. It seems like there is an
intermediate issue with the simulator and image booting.
Write your own minimal bash startup script if you can afford that,
will likely be easier than debugging systemd.
Post by Yunxia Zhu
2. When I boot the image by QEMU it shows 'Ubuntu 16.04.1 tty1', but
when I boot it by gem5 it shows 'Ubuntu 16.04.1 ttyS0'. why does it happen?
This is normal, tty1 is the GUI, ttyS0 is the serial port, which
appears on your terminal. QEMU can also use the serial if you pass
-serial=mon:stdio and console=/dev/ttyS0 kernel CLI.
I think this means that you are not using the same console= linux
kernel CLI option. I would ensure that the kernel CLI is the same on
both runs, as that might explain behavior differences.

Hello Ciro Santilli,
Thanks for your reply. How to check if the kernel CLI is same or not?
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/48601/how-to-display-the-linux-kernel-command-line-parameters-given-for-the-current-bo
Post by Yunxia Zhu
I use "qemu-system-x86_64 -hda ubuntu-16.04.1-64.img -cdrom ubuntu-16.04.1-server-amd64.iso -m 1024 -enable-kvm " to edit the image and I use
"#!/usr/bin/sh
export
M5_PATH="/home/zhu/gem5_FS_64/gem5/full_system_sample/x86-system"
build/X86/gem5.opt \
configs/example/fs.py \
--mem-size=512MB \
--kernel=vmlinux \
--disk-image=ubuntu-16.04.1-64.img \
"
to boot the image with kernel by gem5.
I think if I can boot the image with kernel by QEMU the console will be same. But when I use "sudo qemu-system-x86_64 -kernel vmlinux -hda ubuntu-16.04.1-64.img -append "root=/dev/sda" --enable-kvm " it hangs. I also use 'mount', but it has same problems as before. Could you give me any suggestions? How could you make some changes not within gem5? Thank you.
Although QEMU and gem5 can both boot the same disk image, they have
several subtle hardware model differences, which may lead to different
behaviors. Ubuntu hides that by being awesome and being to boot on a
wide variety of hardwares.

There is too much complexity involved for me to find what is wrong
with your setup.

If you don't absolutely need Ubuntu, here I provide a gem5 Buildroot
setup that just works:
https://github.com/cirosantilli/linux-kernel-module-cheat/tree/8815312cad053d0284c4d91bfbf36a1e9ea207af#gem5-buildroot-setup-getting-started

I haven't yet automated an Ubuntu setup that just works yet, but I might
do that at some point. The only reasonable reason IMHO to use Ubuntu
is if you need a very difficult to compile package that Buildroot does
not have.

Post by Yunxia Zhu
I would ensure that the kernel CLI is the same on
both runs, as that might explain behavior differences.

do that at some point. The only reasonable reason IMHO to use Ubuntu
is if you need a very difficult to compile package that Buildroot does
not have.
Yeah, automating Ubuntu is a major pain. If you have any hints, I'd love to
hear them. I'd like to find someone to work on this.

However, I disagree with your last statement. Some of these "complications"
from running a full desktop operating system are *very* important for
getting correct results from the simulator that will translate to real
systems (e.g., is transparent huge pages turned on by default). Note that
if you're working with a server workload then Ubuntu may not be the right
Linux variant to run. The best research will happen with *exactly the same
software* that will be running on the proposed system.

Cheers,
Jason

Hello Ciro Santilli,
Thanks for your reply. How to check if the kernel CLI is same or not?

I think if I can boot the image with kernel by QEMU the console will be
same. But when I use "sudo qemu-system-x86_64 -kernel vmlinux -hda
ubuntu-16.04.1-64.img -append "root=/dev/sda" --enable-kvm " it hangs. I
also use 'mount', but it has same problems as before. Could you give me any
suggestions? How could you make some changes not within gem5?

Hello Everyone,
I want to automatically start an application in image 16.04.1-64 by
gem5 FS mode with 4.8.13 kernel. The image is built by QEMU and the kernel
is built following by Jason's web(
http://www.lowepower.com/jason/setting-up-gem5-full-system.html). There
is no problem when I combine the image with the kernel by gem5. I have two

Post by Yunxia Zhu
Post by Ciro Santilli
This is normal, tty1 is the GUI, ttyS0 is the serial port, which
appears on your terminal. QEMU can also use the serial if you pass
-serial=mon:stdio and console=/dev/ttyS0 kernel CLI.
I think this means that you are not using the same console= linux
kernel CLI option. I would ensure that the kernel CLI is the same on
both runs, as that might explain behavior differences.
